MATT MAESON

Matt Maeson at the TLA, Philadelphia, PA. 5/30/23.

As a big Matt Maeson fan I was thrilled to see he would be playing at the TLA in Philadelphia. As I showed up to this sold out show an hour early there was already a line for the doors all the way down the street. The show started with Brennan Smiley and his guitar. Right from the start of his set the crowd loved him and was giving him their full attention. The highlight of his set was when he closed out with an incredible cover of the Killers “Read My Mind” that had everyone singing along. When it was time for Matt Maeson to take the stage the crowd erupted in cheer every time it would get quiet in anticipation of him coming out. He led off with “That’s My Cue”, “Grave Digger” and “Me and My Friends Are Lonely”. He got the biggest ovation when he started playing a crowd favorite with “Cringe”. He told the crowd a story about living in a Walmart parking lot and how he ended up staying in a trailer park with Cliffy, the title of his next song. He let the crowd choose between “Feel Good” and “Tribulation” by seeing which song would get the loudest cheer. It was “Tribulation”. He then moved over to playing the piano and brought Brennan back on stage for a song. A highlight of Matt’s set was when he played “Hallucinogenics”, a song that everyone knew all the words to. He closed with “Beggar’s Song” but the audience wouldn’t let him leave without coming out and playing one more, so he returned to finish his set with “Legacy”. It was a bittersweet feeling when the show was over because everyone was so happy with the show, but already can’t wait for the next time Matt comes to Philly.
