ROYEL OTIS
Royel Otis, The TLA, Philadelphia, PA. 5/2/24.
With Royel Otis being one of my favorite bands I couldn’t be more excited to see that they were coming to Philly, especially in an intimate venue like the TLA. The opener for the show was Girl and Girl an Australian Indie rock band with a very fun sound. When they took the stage they had an intro about “calling the doctor” which is the the name of their album. The singer of the band would randomly break into huge guitar riffs and each member of the band covered the whole stage. When they finished their set they left to a huge ovation from the crowd. When Royel Otis ran out to the stage they were met by a deafening applause from the audience. They led off with “Sonic Blue” a new song from the Pratt’s & Pain album. Once they played “I Wanna Dance With You” they got everybody dancing and singing along. All the phones went up when the band started singing “Murder On The Dance Floor” a Sophie Ellis-Bextor cover that blew up on Instagram reels and TikTok. The highlight of the show for me was when they played “Oysters In My Pocket” my favorite of their songs, another that recently blew up on social media. After thanking the crowd and walking off they came back out to encore their cover of the Cranberries’ “Linger”, and then closed out the night with their hit song “Kool Aid”.
