DAVID SHAW
David Shaw, The Foundry, Philadelphia, PA. 2/26/25.
David Shaw left his mark on Philadelphia last week, bringing his latest solo album Take A Look Inside on tour at The Foundry. You may know David as the frontman of the alternative rock band The Revivalists, but this time, he’s taking his sophomore album on a U.S. tour independently—and he’s bringing the house down. Shaw’s style is genre-fluid, seamlessly incorporating blues, Americana, and funk into his raw, authentic storytelling.
Not a bad crowd for a Thursday night at The Foundry. Angel White warmed up the audience, as well as our hearts, with songs like 2733, Down by the River, and Running in Place. His music explores themes of love, identity, and personal reflection, with a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. His ability to bridge genres while maintaining a distinctive, authentic style makes him a rising force in the indie and alternative scene. After Angel’s set, we sat down and talked about his love of music and his Texas roots. It was great to get to know him better, and I had the chance to take a few portraits of him as well.
Between performers, I happened to run into local radio personality Pierre Robert from 93.3 WMMR. It’s always great to see radio hosts supporting artists, even when they aren’t sponsoring the show. Catching up with Pierre was a full-circle moment—I hadn’t spoken to him in person since I was about 12 years old. Looking back, it’s funny to remember how enthusiastic I was about radio as a kid. That passion has definitely shaped who I am today, now that I’m working shows nearly every week and writing reviews for some of my favorite artists.
After chatting with Pierre and some local photographers, I hurried into the pit to capture the start of David’s set. The room was packed, and the energy was electric. Many fans were repping old Revivalists t-shirts and cowboy boots, eager to see him take the stage. He opened with a dramatic performance of One More Day, filling the venue with stomps, handclaps, and his signature passionate, raspy vocals. His show was both energetic and heartfelt, and he even threw in a cover of David Bowie’s Heroes halfway through the set, offering a refreshing break in the performance. He closed the night on a high note with Got Me Feeling Good, getting the crowd fully involved in the moment.
I’d happily see David Shaw live again, and I highly recommend checking out his solo discography. His ability to connect with the audience and deliver such a dynamic performance is truly impressive.
