FLAVOR WAVE

By Bre Cura

Flavor Wave is a five piece band based in West Chester, PA right outside of Philly. They’ve been gearing up for their debut album release and have dropped the final single in anticipation. “Fields” is an upbeat, feel good track perfect for the windows-down weather we’ve been getting this early spring. We got to chat with Kyle Loedel (Vocals) and Josh Speaker (Drums) about this release.

So, you guys are getting ready to drop your debut album soon. What made you choose Fields to be that final single push before the release?

Josh: When we went into the studio to begin recording all these songs, we picked four of our favorites that we wanted to release as singles and worked on them first. But as time went on and we began finishing the other songs we started falling in love with how they were sounding and Fields was one that really stuck out to us. When we were sent the masters of all the songs we listened to them separately and I’m pretty sure we all texted in our group chat saying that Fields made us cry. It’s definitely one of our favorites and we felt like it would be a great one to share with the world before the album to give everyone a taste of what to expect.

And which of you guys wrote the music/lyrics for this track?

Kyle: Matt came to me with the rough outline of the music, and I was able to form the melody and lyrics real quick.

Josh: I remember Matt sending us this clunky audio file of the demo for Fields, and it immediately stuck out. It had a nice bouncy indie rock riff, with a whole different vibe and groove towards the end. Once Kyle put the lyrics on it quickly became a special one to us all

Kyle as the lyricist, what is going on here in terms of inspiration? Did you gather real life experiences or more just pull from a vibe?

Kyle: It’s always a mixture of both for me. When I heard what Matt sent to me, I wrote down some words or phrases of feelings that came to mind. For me, Fields felt like I was at a crossroads in life, and I was dropped in an enormous area with no one else to choose my path besides myself. Feelings like this, for me, happen often. I feel like I’m my own biggest critic, and doubt myself. If anyone is feeling that way, you’re definitely not alone, and this song is for you. It’s up for interpretation what the lyrics could literally mean to you or to any other listener, but that’s the inspiration I had for this one specifically.

What went in to choosing the cover art for Fields?

Josh: For some reason whenever I closed my eyes listening to this song I just saw an open field with someone and their energetic dog happily running through it. And then oddly enough when I listened to the lyrics after they were written they could almost be written from a dogs perspective. Waking up again, heading to the pen, wanting to be free but also under ownership. Once I had that image in my head I wanted to recreate it somehow. So I got my 12 year old chocolate lab Indy and ran through a field with him while he slowly trotted behind panting heavily. But it was a pure moment that I think encapsulates the idea of the song.

Kyle: I can’t stress enough how much I love the cover. Boosh told me his vision for it and it was perfect. He also mentioned that the song could be from the perspective of a dog, and, somehow, that just makes sense. It changed how I think of it, and with Indy on the cover it was like the cherry on top.

Do you think this track summarizes what listeners can expect on the full album, or is this just one taste?

Josh: Just a taste. We wanted to explore a lot about ourselves as musicians on this album and I think that listeners will find each track to have a different feel but with the same core elements in each one. All of us in the band are able to shine on each track in different ways, whether it’s a little break down here, or a nice vocal harmony there, or a driving guitar riff. But we try to deliver that to you in a new way and tone in each song throughout the album.

Kyle: Yea, it’s absolutely just a taste. The things that make this one special to me are completely different compared to all the rest of the songs. Each song of ours so far has a different feel to it and I’m looking forward to seeing how those feelings come across to more listeners.

What are both of your favorite tracks you’re looking forward to releasing?

Kyle: It’s hard to pick one, because they’re all so important to me, but for the sake of a solid answer, I’ll say Fruit. I’m a sucker for closing tracks and ever since we started playing that one it felt like the perfect closer.

Josh: I love all my babies but there some that have been a dream come true to bring to life and I just can’t wait for people to hear. It’s changes all the time but I would have to say Mellow is my favorite right now
